KUALA LUMPUR: Media Prima Labs and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation Sdn Bhd (MDEC) teamed up to bring game developers from around the region together for this year’s “Level Up KL”. The five-day event kicked off today with the 36-hour Southeast Asia Game Jam, in which over 90 participants from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Taiwan work together to come up with mobile game concepts and raw prototypes based on Media Prima-related themes. The theme for 2016 is “kid-centric” and developers were tasked to design games for children aged four to 12. MDEC director of creative content and technologies Hasnul Hadi Samsudin said the government has recognised Malaysian game developers and wants them to be recognised internationally. “We believe there are big opportunities in the game industry and we want to support local developers through this event,” he said. The winners will be announced on Nov 9, and cash prizes of RM8,000, RM5,000 and RM3,000 will be given to the first, second and third places respectively. Winners will also get the chance to develop their products further through commercialisation with Media Prima Berhad’s Alpha Startup programme. (NSTP)
