MDEC and Media Prima team up to push digital game industry
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Digital Economy Corp (MDEC) has roped in Media Prima Bhd’s digital arm Media Prima Digital in its efforts to empower the local game industry.
The two parties have signed a memorandum of understanding today which will see both leverage on each other’s strength and expertise to commercialise digital games development by having widened games developer community, comprising local and foreign talents.
MDEC Datuk Yasmin Mahmood said such collaboration would partly contribute to higher game industry growth this year from 34 per cent last year.
“The agency is always on the lookout for partnership that will expand the creative industry. In the case of this MoU, it is for digital games development. Publishers that our creators are engaged with are internationally based with little to no local presence in this space,” she said.
“This is a huge step for Malaysia to becoming a regional gaming hub. With partnerships like this, we could accelerate the growth of game industry,” she added.
Media Prima Bhd group managing director Datuk Kamal Khalid said the collaboration is expected to attract local and international players and developers, spurring all parties to work together with the aim of boosting the digital games development in Malaysia.
“Most of the work includes encouraging collaboration for all, expanding the ecosystem and accelerating the sector’s productivity, with Media Prima Digital taking on the responsibility of evaluating and publishing digital games that MDEC selected and developed with local publishers,” he said.
The MoU is also one of the first of many steps to prepare the country for Level Up KL 2017, Southeast Asia’s game industry event to be held in November.
